Goal: Our goal is to make the kids value the importance of physical activity in their lives. As we all know, many children currently don't get enough exercise in and out of school. Hopefullly, through our class, they will learn the importance of exercise and stay active outside of school.
Curriculum: Students in grades K-2 focus on individual skill building. They practice many different skills that will be implemented later on in gameplay. Some examples are as follows:
- Throwing a ball with one hand
- Catching a ball with two hands
- Kicking a ball with either foot
- Striking a ball with a tennis racket, baseball bat, etc..
- Jumping rope
- Shooting basketballs
- Frisbee throwing
- Basketball dribbling
Along with the skill development piece, I also introduce some team-oriented activities such as tag games, soccer, clean up your backyard, the parachute, relay races, etc...
Students in grades 3-5 focus on applying their individual skills to gameplay. The objective is to expose the kids to as many different sports as possible. If they can find one or two sports that they really enjoy, then hopefully they will pursue these sports outside of school and after their O'Dea careers. Here are some examples of the sports we play:
- Ultimate Frisbee
- Touch Football
- Speedball (ask your child!)
- Track and Field
- Frisbee Golf
- Jai Alai
Intramurals: We have a great intramural sports league here at O'Dea. Kids in 4-5 grade have the oppurtunity to sign up for a variety of sports leagues. The games take place during lunch recess, and many kids choose to play. The kids are assinged to teams, choose team names, and then are responsible for following the league schedule. The teams that finish in 1st and 2nd place have their team pictures posted on the school's Hall of Fame, which is right outside the gymnasium.
