9/6 Weekly Family Owl Update

O'Dea Owl Families!

Cool weather and fall are starting to arrive!  It has been a great start to September at O’Dea!  We are excited to have our first family engagement events of the year with 9/13 Principal Coffee Talk, 9/16 School Accountability Meeting, and 9/27 CSU Canvas Stadium Community Classic (see below for more info).  We also received our 2023-34 assessment results and, as a school, continue to perform above the PSD and state average!  Want to learn more?  Come to the School Accountability Meeting on the 16th!

Important Announcements and Updates

Next week, we have a lockdown drill on Thursday, September 12th. It is essential that you know that we approach these drills with great responsibility and sensitivity. We keep conversations centered on safety and never allow conversations in our classrooms that might frighten children. We encourage you to talk to your child about the drill and answer questions as you find appropriate for your child.

Please take a moment and log into ParentVUE to update your information, sign your Code of Conduct, and enter any absences.

We have been working on O’Dea’s system to support teaching behavior.  O’Dea has a robust positive reinforcement system with Owl Slips and Flight Rules for clear expectations.  Sometimes, students require a teaching moment with behavior, and we wanted to share how we approach this at school.  We label all school behavior as positive or negative, with positive and negative consequences.  When students make a poor or negative choice, teachers will use this process to support learning prosocial behavior skills.  This process is intended to teach behavior rather than be punitive.  The form helps the student think about his/her choices and what else s/he could have chosen to do, how to fix it/apologize, and most importantly, what they can do next time.  Some parents have found this valuable process at home, so we want to share it with all parents.  Here is a link to a training video (fictional with acting) to help you see and learn the process.
